With its much bluer than usual needles, the Extra Blue Limber Pine really stands out. A fast-growing evergreen tree up to around 25 feet tall, Pinus flexilis ‘Extra Blue’ is a stunning specimen and perfect for the garden. With the blue foliage that holds its color well throughout the colder months, it is made for winter interest. It develops a natural pyramid form.
Highly tolerant of pollution, Pinus flexilis ‘Extra Blue’ is made for urban locations. Its dense growth makes it perfect for using as a windbreak and for privacy. Suitable for cultivation in zones 4 to 7, Limber Pine is native to the western US. This tree is tolerant of deer and dry conditions once established.
Extra Blue Limber Pine Care
With its tall form, the Pinus flexilis ‘Extra Blue’ should not be sited under power lines or overhanging structures. It prefers full sun, but will tolerate partial shade, and requires a free-draining soil. This Pinus flexilis dislikes standing water, and any locations prone to waterlogging should be avoided. It can tolerate any soil type and pH level. Supplementary fertilization is not generally necessary and can even harm the tree.
Pinus flexilis ‘Extra Blue’ produces a central leader and rarely requires pruning. Light pruning of the new growth should be carried out in early spring if required.
Extra Blue Limber Pine Spacing
When fully grown, Pinus flexilis ‘Extra Blue’ can reach in excess of 25 feet tall and 15 feet wide. Care is needed on planting to make sure that the low canopy does not obstruct any views when mature.
