Coneflowers are one of the most bountiful and forgiving North American natives. If you’re new to gardening, this is a perfect starter perennial. This plant thrives on neglect and is sure to be a favorite year after year. Eye-Catcher™ Canary Feathers Coneflower is the more groovy version of the typical purple Echinacea purpurea. This is a medium sized flowering perennial with luscious upright green foliage with an abundance of 5-inch yellow sunflower-like faces.
There is so much to love about this plant. The flowers support those hard working bees and butterflies. Did we mention deer resistance? This is the perfect plant for every garden bed. Add echinacea to the border surrounding vegetable gardens to help bring in the beneficial insects. Bring outdoor beauty indoors by making a floral arrangement of cut flowers. Since there will be an overabundance in your garden, you won’t even notice they are missing.
Eye-Catcher Canary Feathers Coneflower Care
It is easy to please this sun-loving flower with a daily dose of at least 6 hours or more of sunlight. Soil pH can range from acidic to alkaline. Keep soils more on the dry side and ensure that it is well-draining. It has lower to average watering needs and fertilizer is not necessary. Adding compost annually is a good practice to help rejuvenate the soil and increase organic matter.
This is one hardy perennial that can take the cold in zones 4 to 8. Coneflowers need no winter clean up or pruning. Keep seed heads around for hungry winter birds and the dried remains add dramatic natural architecture in the bleakness of winter.
Eye-Catcher Canary Feathers Coneflower Spacing
In the initial planting, space these coneflowers 14 to 16 inches apart. In a few years, coneflowers will reseed and new plants will colonize the area. Planting coneflowers in masses create a superb garden design.
