Fairy Wings Barrenwort (Epimedium x ‘Pink Panther’) is a new hybrid of the elegant and evergreen Epimedium. Although it sports two-toned lavender and pink flowers, the real show comes from the large foliage that features both green and bronze shades. The native of this plant comes from wooded and shady areas of the world, and it plays a striking role in woodland and shady gardens. 

Hardy in zones 5 through 9, Fairy Wings Barrenwort grows to just over a foot high and nearly 2 feet wide, so it also works well as a groundcover in the landscape, especially in places where foliage that needs full sun just can’t thrive. This easy-care plant resists most pests and diseases, and both deer and rabbits leave it alone. Place this lovely under trees or along woodland paths for its full colorful fairy effect.

Fairy Wings Barrenwort Care

Start your barrenwort off by planting it in conditions that mimic its native woodland areas. That means fertile soil that drains well but can retain some moisture (not the point of soggy, especially in full shade). Give it the kind of dappled sun that falls under trees or morning sun and good afternoon shade for best results. 

Try to shelter Fairy Wings from harsh wind and give it extra water in periods of drought. There is no need to fertilize the plant, but give it fresh organic matter around the base each year, unless it has received plenty from fallen leaves. If any of the leaves look damaged or withered, remove them in early spring before flower stalks form.

Space your barrenwort so it has room to spread to full size, nearly 2 feet from one another, and at least a foot from the edge of a path so it does not spread onto the walkway.
