It’s big and bold but also low and spreading. Feathered Friends ‘Parrot Paradise’ Ajuga will add three-colored wow to shady areas of a landscape. Like other bugleweeds, this ajuga is grown for its attractive foliage and ability to spread as a gorundcover. But unlike many varieties, Parrot Paradise has larger leaves and spreads to a larger size of up to 24 inches. At only 6 inches high, the groundcover can help control weeds and add color to otherwise dark and dull areas of the yard.
Plant this ajuga in partial to full shade in zones 4 through 9. In addition to the year-round foliage display or yellow, orange, and red tones, the low grower will produce cobalt blue flowers in spring. Use it to fill in bare spots near structures or entries, or simply plant it to complement other shade lovers like pulmonarias and heucheras. At only about 6 inches high, the bugleweed will add color near other plants without hiding them. This evergreen groundcover is deer resistant and hard for the eyes to resist in all seasons.
Feathered Friends ‘Parrot Paradise’ Ajuga Care
Seriously, this colorful plant performs best if it receives no more than 4 to 6 hours of sun a day. It even thrives with no sun. Choose a spot that gives it the shade it deserves and in soil that drains well. Consider its mature size when planting several in a bed so it has room to spread. Just fill in with a few inches of organic mulch to help suppress weeds until the ajuga fills out and to hold in moisture.
Water your ajuga consistently in its first year and give it some drip irrigation in periods of high heat and drought. Always water near the base of the plant, not above the leaves. Fertilize each spring if you like or add additional compost to keep plenty of nitrogen for the leaves. This easy-care groundcover only needs pruning once a year, after flowers fade. And you might need to divide it every few years if it grows too matted or compact.
Feathered Friends ‘Parrot Paradise’ Ajuga Spacing
Space this pretty ajuga about 20 to 24 inches apart to give it room to spread and breathe. If the plants start out crowded, you will need to divide them sooner.
