Gardeners generally think of Lilacs as only coming in shades of purple or sometimes pink. Fiala Remembrance proves that is not true. The white, double blooms on Fiala Remembrance are truly impressive and the scent is not any less. Flower spikes measuring from 6-12 inches contrast with dense dark green foliage. Native pollinator insects are drawn to the sweet nectar in masses. Flowers and foliage are great for flower arranging.
Fiala Remembrance is a full sized Lilac that will need a bit of annual maintenance to remain vigorous and covered in blooms. Lilacs are lovely when planted as part of a succession planting. Using varieties that bloom at different times in the spring will prolong your enjoyment and provide food for wildlife in the garden.
Fiala Remembrance Lilac Care
Lilacs prefer a bright, sunny spot that also has moist, rich soil. A neutral to alkaline soil pH is also needed. Watering Lilacs consistently for the first 2-3 years will help them to establish in the garden well and handle prolonged periods of drought and heat better. Mulching with organic compost or leaves in the fall improves the soil's nutrition and moisture holding abilities. A generous 2-3 inch layer a few inches from the base of the shrub is all that is needed.
Pruning Lilacs is very easy. After blooming, cut branches back by one third. This will encourage growth for next year's buds. Older Lilacs usually respond to a hard cutting back quite well. Cutting back one third of the branches at a time will help to reinvigorate the shrub, while ensuring that there will still be blooms for the next year. Suckers happen once Lilacs are mature. Cutting any unwanted suckers out from below the surface of the soil will help keep this shrub neat and tidy and within its boundary. Applying a well balanced, slow release fertilizer early in the spring is recommended for supporting the new growth and flowering.
Fiala Remembrance Lilac Spacing
Fiala Remembrance would make a great addition to any informal hedge or at the back of a cottage garden bed as a specimen plant. The mature height is 7-9 feet with a width of 6-8 feet. Space plants at 6 feet on center to ensure good air circulation between plants.
