Fiesta Time Hollyhock brings cottage-garden drama in a shorter package. It produces double, fringed blooms in rich cerise pink on sturdy stems that top out around 3 feet tall and 18–24 inches wide. Unlike traditional hollyhocks that can soar well above fences, this compact selection fits comfortably into courtyard gardens and even large containers. It flowers its first year from seed, delivering midsummer color when many vertical accents are still settling in.
Hollyhocks trace their roots to Asia and Europe, long cherished in old-world gardens. The ruffled blossoms draw butterflies and hummingbirds, and the blooms are showy enough for cutting. Alcea rosea ‘Fiesta Time’ tolerates juglone, making it suitable for planting near black walnut trees. Though often treated as a biennial or short-lived perennial, it will self-seed lightly under favorable conditions.
Fiesta Time Hollyhock Care
Plant Fiesta Time in full sun with at least six hours of direct light daily for best flowering. Choose fertile, well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 8.0, and amend heavy clay with compost to improve drainage. Water regularly during establishment, then maintain even moisture without allowing the soil to stay saturated. A light application of balanced fertilizer in early spring supports vigorous growth, especially in lean soils.
After flowering, cut stems back to 6–8 inches above the ground to encourage fresh basal growth. In windy locations, staking may be helpful while stems are elongating. Remove spent blooms if you wish to limit self-seeding, or leave a few to mature for natural reseeding.
Fiesta Time Hollyhock Spacing
Space plants 18–24 inches apart in landscape borders to allow airflow and reduce disease pressure. In a sunny border, the upright spikes create a natural focal point without overwhelming neighboring plants. In cottage-style beds, combine with liatris (blazing star) and coreopsis (tickseed) for a layered summer display, or soften the base with hardy geranium and Shasta daisies for extended seasonal interest.
For container planting, use one plant in a large decorative pot (>12") as a vertical accent surrounded by lower fillers. Combine it with blue ageratum (flossflower) and a spill of verbena to highlight the cerise blooms while keeping the arrangement balanced.
