‘Fignomenal’ Fig Tree, Ficus carica, is a compact dwarf variety that’s perfect for smaller gardens and growing in containers. This compact fig reaches 30 inches tall and wide. It is self-fertile so it does not need another plant to produce the deliciously sweet fruit. The fruit has a brown outer skin with a bright pinkish-red center. Delicious and used in so many ways, including salads, pies, and jams, this heavy-fruiting variety will supply you with plenty of figs to try in new recipes.
Fignomenal Fig Tree Care
Plant Fignomenal in a full sun location, where it receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Plant in well-draining soil rich in organic garden compost. If you live in a cooler climate, you can plant Fignomenal Fig Tree in a lightweight container to move indoors over the winter.
Growing Fignomenal Fig Tree
With added protection, Fignomenal Fig Tree can grow outdoors year-round in zones 8-11; be sure to mulch the root zone to help insulate the tree. In zones 4-7, Fignomenal will need to be brought indoors. Whether planted in the garden or a container, this tree requires well-draining soil rich in organic matter, regular feeding, and a sunny location with ideally over 6 hours of sunlight to produce fruit.
In the fall, bring your tree indoors before temperatures drop below 60 degrees F. The leaves may naturally drop off as a reaction to cooler weather and light changes, so give this tree a brief time to adjust to the indoor climate. Fignomenal Fig Tree may produce fruit indoors in the right environment. Prune when necessary to maintain its shape.
Watering Fignomenal Fig Tree
Water deeply, hitting the roots, and watch the soil so it doesn’t get too dry. Check the soil often to maintain adequate moisture levels, particularly in the warm summer season or if it's in an area exposed to drying winds.
Feeding Fignomenal Fig Tree
Fertilize Fignomenal Fig Tree with a high nitrogen formula once a month in early spring and early summer, especially if grown in a container. Mulching with a thin layer of organic compost will help feed plants and retain soil moisture. Do not fertilize this tree in the winter.
