Filips Magic Moment Arborvitae by Proven Winners ColorChoice is a very unique arborvitae perfect for a homeowner looking for unique to grow in their yard. This shrub has new growth that is bright yellow, which lasts all year long due to being an evergreen. We particularly like planting these at each side of an entryway or the driveway. Even can even be planted in large garden planters for something unique that lasts all year. It grows into a little dense cone shaped shrub that requires no pruning. This Proven Winners ColorChoice shrub is a true standout plant any gardener would love to have in their collection.
Filips Magic Moment, Thuja occidentalis USPP 21,974, is native to North America, which means this is drought tolerant and can thrive with very little care and maintenance. This plant can also survive very harsh winters and can handle temperatures as low as -20 degrees in growing zone 3a.
Filips Magic Moment Arborvitae Care
These shrubs prefer deep, well drained soil. Fertile soil also helps this shrub perform better, although that is not required. We recommend applying a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and add protection during periods of harsh weather. Fertilize these shrubs in early spring using a fertilizer from the home improvement store that is specific for evergreens. Use according to directions.
Pruning Filips Magic Moment Arborvitae is not needed. You may trim dead branches anytime throughout the year. If you must prune, do so in early summer after the new growth has emerged. Be careful not to cut too deep, because you could make the plant unsightly and it may not recover for a long period. We do not recommend pruning if possible.
Filips Magic Moment Arborvitae Spacing
If you are growing this into a unique evergreen privacy hedge or wind break, space these shrubs 24 inches apart, center on center. If you just plan on growing these to their full cone shaped size, plant at least 48 inches apart, center on center. If growing in a garden planter, you should use a large planter that is at least 48 inches wide so the roots have enough room to grow.
Landscaping Tip: Conical evergreens like Fluffy and Filip's Magic Moment arborvitae are often planted on either side of a front door to provide a hint of formality to a home's entrance. In this case, the plants function more or less as mirror-image specimens of one another.
