The Fingerpaint Foam Flower has very unique variegated foliage that adds an unexpected pop of color and a lacy texture to a shady landscape. The glossy bright green lobed leaves have scalloped edges that feature dark purplish-burgundy along the center midrib and veins. Tiarella 'Fingerpaint' is a showy perennial normally grown for its foliage. In early May, a short flower spike emerges and displays mini bell-shaped blooms in an ivory hue that lasts into the summer.
Use this plant as a groundcover, particularly in an area that receives limited light. Foam Flower also does very well in borders, beds, or containers. This low-maintenance plant is native to North America and deer-resistant, so it is a great choice to include in areas prone to animal damage. The delicate flowers will draw butterflies into your landscape for added convenience. This mounded plant grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 9.
Fingerpaint Foamflower Care
Plant Fingerpaint Foam Flower in part sun to full shade. Use rich, moist soil that is neutral to acidic and has good drainage. Foam Flower has average water needs and will need a drink when the top few inches of the soil dry out. This plant prefers evenly moist conditions, so saturate the soil to drench the root ball when applying water.
Fertilizing is unnecessary when grown in rich soil, but apply balanced, slow-release plant food in the spring to support new growth. This clump-forming plant can be divided in the fall. Foam Flower is semi-evergreen in areas with mild winters.
Fingerpaint Foamflower Spacing
The mounded Fingerpaint Foam Flower will spread 10 to 12 inches wide and reach 10 to 12 inches tall. Plants can be spaced 10 inches apart to create a dense mass planting; although, give the plants more room, and they will gradually fill in the empty space with runners and new plants. A 12-inch container is enough space for one to two plants.
