Firefly Hydrangea is a truly stunning red Hydrangea that has masses of blooms that never seem to quit. The large, deep green leaves show off the white eyed red blooms perfectly. The compact sturdiness of Firefly makes it perfect for smaller gardens or growing in a beautiful container. Hydrangeas are often added to Cottage garden plantings for their long lasting cut flowers. Firefly will keep producing blooms all summer long.
Hydrangeas color is influenced by the pH of the soil they are grown in. More alkaline soil produces redder shades, while more acid soil produces bluer shades. This is something that can be easily controlled when Hydrangeas are grown in a container. Hydrangeas also work in seaside gardens. They tolerate salt and wind better than other deciduous shrubs.
Firefly Hydrangea Care
A moist well drained soil is perfect for Firefly Hydrangea. Mulching with either leaves or organic compost in the fall will help this shrub to make it through the winter safely. Hydrangeas will grow well in either full sun or part shade. In the hotter hardiness zones, afternoon shade is well tolerated. Firefly will tolerate a wide range of soil pH making it easy to use in a woodland setting or in a traditional cottage garden plan.
Fertilizing is only needed when growth emerges in spring. A well balanced, slow release food will help to keep the blooms forming. Pruning is very minimal on this Hydrangea and is best done early in the spring as well. Flower buds are formed on new growth. Deadheading is not usually necessary as the dried flower heads add interesting structure to the winter garden.
Firefly Hydrangea Spacing
The spacing for Firefly Hydrangea can be a bit closer than other varieties. A spacing of 4 feet on center is perfect when planting more than one Hydrangea together. Containers used for growing should be larger than 24 inches in diameter.
