Fireside® Ninebark, Physocarpus opulifolius Fireside®, offers three seasons of outstanding interest and maintains its beauty in all phases. Clusters of blush-pink flowers appear in spring and offer a beautiful contrast to its deep-colored foliage, with bright-red new foliage emerging, adding visual interest and a pop of color as the new leaves unfurl, eventually turning to a dark reddish purple. Fireside Ninebark is extremely easy to grow yet hardy and drought tolerant, growing well in zones 3-7.
Fireside Ninebark grows in an upright rounded shape; it keeps a neat growth habit and reaches heights of 5-7 feet and widths of 4-6 feet.
Fireside® Ninebark Care
Fireside Ninebark is an extremely attractive, adaptable, low-fuss shrub. It can grow in a range of soil types, although it will grow best in soil rich in organic matter. It does well in full sun or partial shade, although the more light it gets, the more vibrant its leaf color will be.
Fireside Ninebark doesn’t need fertilization especially if planted in rich soil. Water newly planted shrubs deeply once a week to get them established. Once established, this shrub will only need extra watering in severe heat or drought. Every few years, Fireside Ninebark can be pruned back 35-50% of its overall size in late winter to rejuvenate its spring growth.
Fireside® Ninebark Spacing
Fireside Ninebark can be planted in groupings to create an informal, colorful privacy hedge. The mature spread of plants reaches 4-6 ft, so when planting in groups or as a hedge, allow at least 4 feet between planting holes to accommodate the natural branching without overcrowding.
