Hosta plants have a well-deserved reputation for being a reliable source of hardy greenery, and the First Frost Hosta is a wonderful example. Broad, heart-shaped foliage grows in a rosette formation, giving this plant a very full and lush appearance. The leaves are blueish-green with gold along the edges that gradually fade to white throughout the growing season. Tall flower scapes appear during the summer and display lavender blooms.
This plant thrives in the shade, making it an excellent addition to a low-light area. Feature this clump-forming, mounded perennial in borders, beds, or mass plantings. The greenery looks lovely when used along a walkway, deck, or as a foundation planting. The First Frost Hosta is a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 9.
First Frost Hosta Care
Plant this leafy perennial in full shade. The ideal spot for this plant will receive about 4 hours of sunlight. Stick to a consistent watering schedule for the first year. After this Hosta is acclimated, it will not require frequent watering, but it will be helpful to give the plant a drink during a drought. Use moist, well-drained soil. Hosta plants are not heavy feeders, but applying balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring will support consistent growth.
The flower scapes can be removed after three-fourths of the buds have opened. Removing the blooms will prevent the plant from going to seed and direct more energy into the greenery. All of the growth can be removed after the first frost. A layer of mulch will protect the roots during the winter.
First Frost Hosta Spacing
First Frost Hosta grows 12 to 16 inches tall and 30 to 36 inches wide. Create a dense border or mass planting by spacing plants 28 to 34 inches apart.
