Fleabane is an easy-care plant that boasts showy spring flowers. Large foliage has a gray-green hue and remains at a basal level to provide a nice contrast to the daisy-like flowers that stand above the greenery. The petals are a very light and subdued shade of lavender and surround a yellow eye. Erigeron pulchellus supports pollinators for added convenience.
Fleabane is native to the eastern U.S., so it thrives with little attention or effort. The spreading growth habit creates a mat-like groundcover that can beautify a drab landscape or uneven ground. This plant can also handle less than ideal conditions, so it is a good option for challenging terrains or gardeners who are not very involved. Fleabane grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 9.
Fleabane Care
Fleabane is an adaptable plant that can handle drought conditions and poor-quality soil. Expect the best results when grown in rich, moist soil that is well-drained. Plant in full sun to partial shade and water when the top few inches of soil are dry. Feed this plant in the spring using a 5-10-5 fertilizer.
Deadhead the spent flowers to encourage another flush of blooms. Trim the growth back to ground level in the fall.
Fleabane Spacing
This upright, spreading plant will reach 12 to 15 inches tall and 10 to 12 inches wide. Plants can grow as close as 10 to 12 inches apart for a dense ground cover.
