What could be better than panicles of pale purple flowers wafting a powdery, sweet, and somewhat spicy aroma in spring? A second round of these sweet flowers in autumn! Flowerfesta® Purple Dwarf Lilac is a unique reblooming dwarf lilac. Also known as Syringa meyeri Flowerfesta® Purple, this lilac adds color, fragrance, and texture to any landscape. With its showy flowers and complementary green foliage, it provides interest in late spring, early summer, and late fall. This shrub is a magnet for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and neighbors who can’t get enough of its perfume.
With its compact size, reaching only 3 to 5 feet wide, this striking ornamental is perfect for smaller spaces, including decks, patios, and porches. Plant it as an eye-catching specimen in a large container or use it in borders, hedges, and beds as an accent. This exceptionally adaptable, cold-tolerant ornamental is drought tolerant once its roots are established and typically disease resistant. A low-maintenance plant, Flowerfesta® Purple Dwarf Lilac offers a busy gardener sweet-smelling blossoms with minimal work.
Flowerfesta® Purple Dwarf Lilac Care
This shrub grows well in full sun to partial shade. For the best flowering, select a spot in full sun. Plant it in moist, well-draining, alkaline soil containing high organic matter. Amend the soil with compost if needed. The soil’s pH should be between 6.6 to 8.4.
Lilacs don’t care for wet feet, so don’t water unless the top layer of soil is dry. This shrub will require about an inch of water per week. Flowerfesta® Purple Dwarf Lilac is not a heavy feeder; provide it with a balanced (10-10-10), slow-release fertilizer during early spring if needed.
Lilacs bloom on old wood, so do not prune until after the blooming season has ended. When pruning, remove any damaged, dead or crossing branches. To encourage more profuse flowering, deadhead as needed.
When grown in a container, Flowerfesta® needs a pot at least 18 inches in diameter with room for the roots to grow. Monitor the soil moisture carefully. Lilacs maintained in containers typically require watering more often than those planted in the soil.
Flowerfesta® Purple Dwarf Lilac Spacing
Plant Flowerfesta® in containers, foundation plantings, hedges, borders, and beds. Space each plant 3 to 5 feet apart, and plant with great companions such as dogwood, clematis, and peonies.
