Growing Zones
The Fluffy Arborvitae, Thuja plicata 'SMNTPGF', has bright bold foliage that emerges yellow and give the plant a halo-like effect, even in the winter. These shrubs are sure to stand out in any garden. We especially like planting one bush in 2 garden planters at the entryway or driveway for year round interest with minimal care requirements.
These medium sized shrubs grow into a pyramidal shape with no pruning necessary. The Fluffy arborvitae is native to North America and is drought tolerant, disease resistant, and deer & pest resistant. Once established, these shrubs require minimal effort and care.
These Proven Winners ColorChoice shrubs will first be available in the spring of 2019. So order today to ensure you reserve what you want before we run out!
Fluffy Arborvitae Care
Plant these bushes in well drained soil for best performance. We recommend applying a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and help protect the roots in harsh climates. Apply fertilizer in early spring designed for evergreens. You can purchase the fertilizer at most local home improvement stores. Apply according to the directions.
Pruning Fluffy Arborvitae is not necessary. But if you would like to trim, do so in spring after the new growth has started to flush out. Do not cut large branches, or you could leave an unsightly hole in the shrub, which could take a long time to recover from. In general, we do not recommend pruning, and only trimming dead branches.
Fluffy Arborvitae Spacing
Plant these shrubs 5 feet apart, center on center for a unique yellow foliage privacy hedge. If you do no wish to grow into a hedge, space these at least 10 feet apart, center on center.
If you plant in a garden planter, choose one that is at least 6 feet wide to ensure there is enough room for the roots. Also, you can consider allowing the roots to grow through the base of the planter and into the ground. This is recommended for harsh winter climates especially.
Landscaping Tip: Conical evergreens like Fluffy and Filip's Magic Moment arborvitae are often planted on either side of a front door to provide a hint of formality to a home's entrance. In this case, the plants function more or less as mirror-image specimens of one another.
