Growing Zones
The flowers of the Flutter™ Deep Blue Pincushion plant are not the largest, but their lilac-blue color and intricate shape more than make up for it. Blooming from late spring until the end of summer, the softly colored pincushion flowers of this Scabiosa columbaria are held aloft on upright stems. Remaining compact to around one foot high and wide, this perennial is perfect for using as a filler in the garden.
With its long blooming time, the Flutter™ Deep Blue Pincushion is ideal for attracting pollinators into your garden or growing as a cut flower to brighten up your home. This pincushion flower has a clump-forming habit and is perfectly suited to growing in a container or trough to place on your deck. Being generally resistant to deer, you will not have to worry about growing it in a rural landscape.
Flutter™ Deep Blue Pincushion Flower Care
The Flutter™ Deep Blue Pincushion prefers to be grown in full sun for the most abundant blooms that repeat all season long. With average irrigation needs, you will need to water this Scabiosa regularly to keep the soil moist. Feeding this perennial is not strictly necessary. However, you can apply a balanced liquid feed during the summer month to give it a boost.
As a low-maintenance perennial, the Flutter™ Deep Blue Pincushion does not require much ongoing care. Nevertheless, once the flowers begin to fade, you can cut the stem back to just above a leaf to encourage new blooms to appear. As the foliage dies back in winter, it can be cut back to ground level.
Flutter™ Deep Blue Pincushion Flower Spacing
The Flutter™ Deep Blue Pincushion tends to grow to around 12 to 14 inches high and 10 to 12 inches wide. If you choose to plant this Scabiosa out as part of a group, a spacing of 12 to 14 inches between plants is advisable.
