Pincushion flowers are excellent plants to add to any pollinator garden bed. The fluffy, pure white flowers of Flutter™  Pure White Pincushion Flower draw in beneficial pollinators from early summer to the first frost of fall and make for long-lasting cut flowers in arrangements. The slightly gray-green foliage remains attractive all season, resisting most pests and diseases.

Pincushion flowers do a great job of filling empty spots in the garden and seasonal containers. The shorter height of the Flutter™ series makes it suitable to add as a filler in a hanging basket. Although the best flowering will occur when this perennial is in full sun, it will tolerate some shade and can be grown under cover of a pergola or other structure. Deer rarely bother to browse on Scabiosa columbaria. As new growth emerges in the spring, slugs and snails may be an issue. Scabiosa looks best when paired with other traditional cottage garden plants such as coreopsis, lamb’s ear, artemisia, and hydrangeas of all types.

Flutter™ Pure White Pincushion Flower Care

Pincushion Flowers will grow well in almost any spot as long as the soil is well draining year-round. A neutral to alkaline soil pH is preferred, and heavy clay soil must be amended with compost to make it lighter. Scabiosa will grow well with an annual layer of mulch on its root zone. Use finely shredded leaves, arborist chips, or compost that will gradually decompose and add nutrients to the soil over time. Fertilize annually with a topdressing of a slow-release feed for flowering plants. Container-grown Pincushion Flowers will grow well with feeding once a month. Use a diluted liquid fertilizer when the soil is damp. Dry plants are at risk of suffering from fertilizer burn.

Flutter™ Pure White is a short-lived herbaceous perennial and benefits from regular dividing. Dividing older plant clumps every 3-4 years will reinvigorate the roots and is best done in the spring. Keep newly transplanted starts well watered through the growing season. Deadheading is not necessary for the Flutter™ series. The plants are self-cleaning and produce tiny amounts of seed. Clean-up spent top growth in the late winter or early spring as the new growth begins to sprout.

Flutter™ Pure White Pincushion Flower Spacing

The mature size of the Flutter™ Pure White is a compact 14 inches tall and 12 inches wide. This useful plant can be tucked into just about any mixed seasonal container. Place the plants 10 inches apart when planting in the garden bed.

Guide: How to Care for Your New Plant(s)

Plant Addicts Warranty - 1 Year (Extra Purchase Required)

We encourage all plant lovers to purchase the Plant Addicts Warranty, whether you're a new gardener or an expert. There are many variables outside of anyone's control that can cause a plant to die. Hungry animals, drought, poor soil conditions, over watering, diseases & pests are all good examples of what can cause plants to die. The Plant Addicts Warranty is a 1 year warranty protecting you from all of the unknowns and will replace your plant if something were to happen to it.

The warranty is purchased on a per plant basis and must be purchased at the same time as the plant(s). We will cover 100% of the price of the plant, but the warranty does not cover shipping costs. SImply let us know if your plant has died within 1 year of receiving it and we will get you a new one shipped out as soon as possible (depending on the time of the year and availability). We may ask for photos for documentation purposes, but we try to make the process as easy as possible.

Guarantee and Warranty

Plant Shipping

Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.

Winter to Early Spring

We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.

Summer

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.

Fall into Winter

We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!

Winter

Get your order in early to reserve your plants for Spring planting!

Once your plant is shipped you’ll receive an automated email with tracking information.
