Growing Zones
If you are on the hunt for a purple-leaved perennial, the Forever Purple coral bells deserve a spot at the top of your list of contenders. This heuchera is exceedingly adaptable. Whether in sun or shade, the foliage is an intense purple that does not fade. Short sprays of purple-pink flowers bloom from spring to summer and attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
These low-maintenance perennials are an excellent way to add enduring color to the landscape. These deer- and rabbit-resistant plants make great borders or be used in mass plantings as a groundcover. Coral bells like this one can also lend their blooms to cut flower arrangements. Their compact nature and ability to handle heat and sun also make them a solid choice for container plantings.
Forever Purple Coral Bells Care
The Forever Purple coral bells are exceptionally easy to care for. They prefer well-drained, fertile soil but tolerate poorer soils as long as there is not excessive moisture. During the first year following planting check soil around the plant once or twice weekly when the plant is growing and water if dry. Once established, they only require supplemental water during extended dry spells. A layer of mulch spread around the plant and a yearly application of an organic, slow-release fertilizer will keep the heuchera vigorous.
Heuchera like the Forever Purple have fairly simple pruning requirements. Cut off spent flower stalks to keep the plant looking tidy during the growing season. After a hard freeze when the foliage dies back, cut the plant back to just above ground level. In warm areas where foliage does not die back in winter, remove any winter-burned leaves in the spring.
Forever Purple Coral Bells Spacing
The Forever Purple coral bells have a mounding habit and grow quickly to reach a height of 12 inches tall and a spread of 18 to 24 inches. Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart. If planting in a container, make sure any container has adequate drain holes.
