Fragrant Tea Olive perfumes the garden with tiny white blooms that carry a sweet apricot-like fragrance. Osmanthus fragrans grows as a broadleaf evergreen shrub or small tree, often reaching 10 to 15 feet tall and wide in home landscapes. The glossy dark green leaves are leathery with finely toothed edges, giving the plant a refined look. We place it near entries, patios, and garden paths because the fragrance often arrives before the flowers are noticed.

This East Asian evergreen is native to China, Japan, and the Himalayas, where the scented flowers have long been used to flavor tea and sweets. Bloom can occur in early spring and again in fall, with some plants flowering sporadically through mild winter weather. Fragrant Tea Olive is slow to moderate growing, drought tolerant once established, deer resistant, and easy to maintain with only occasional shaping. Plant it as a fragrant specimen, privacy screen, hedge, small tree, courtyard plant, sensory garden feature, or evergreen backdrop for flowering shrubs and perennials.

Fragrant Tea Olive Care

Plant Fragrant Tea Olive in full sun to partial shade, with afternoon shade helpful in hot southern climates. It grows best in moist, well-drained soil with good organic matter. Slightly acidic soil is preferred, though established plants can tolerate clay, loam, or sandy soil when drainage is reliable.

Water deeply to keep the root zone evenly moist during the first growing season. Once established, Fragrant Tea Olive tolerates dry periods, but flowering and foliage quality are better with supplemental water during long hot spells. Fertilize in early spring with a complete slow-release fertilizer before new growth begins. Mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and protect roots from temperature swings.

Prune Fragrant Tea Olive lightly after a major bloom cycle or in late winter for size control. Use selective cuts to shorten stray stems, encourage branching, or train the plant into a small multi-trunk tree. Avoid heavy shearing, since it can reduce the natural shape and remove flowering wood.

Fragrant Tea Olive Spacing

Space Fragrant Tea Olive 8 to 10 feet apart for a dense hedge or evergreen screen. Allow 10 to 15 feet between plants when growing each one as a separate specimen or small tree. For containers, choose a large pot at least 24 inches wide with drainage holes, and overwinter the plant indoors in bright light in zones outside its hardiness range.

In warm foundation beds, use Fragrant Tea Olive with loropetalum and abelias, which add seasonal flowers and foliage contrast and share similar sun and drainage needs. Daylilies can fill the sunny front edge with summer bloom below the evergreen canopy. In large containers, pansies can provide cool-season color around the base while the tea olive supplies fragrance and structure.
