The glossy green-gold foliage of the Francis Mason Abelia provides interest in spades and that is even before we consider its stunning flowers. Abelia (Linnaea) x grandiflora ‘Francis Mason’ as it is botanically known, produces gold leaves suspended by red stems and white scented flowers from midsummer onwards. These attributes combined with a final size of around 4 feet make this abelia a popular and handy shrub.
In the right conditions, the Francis Mason Abelia is easy to grow and care for and is hardy down to USDA zones 6. Semi-evergreen depending on the location, it is a tough and fast-growing shrub. Francis Mason is well suited for adding to a mixed border or for forming an attractive yet informal low hedge.
Francis Mason Abelia Care
You can grow the Francis Mason Abelia in full sun to partial shade. However, the best foliage color is produced under full sun. It prefers a fertile and free-draining soil and should be watered regularly until established. Feed with a slow-release, general-purpose fertilizer in early spring to support flowering and plant health.
Prune in early spring to shape and remove dead or damaged material. Some old wood can be pruned out each year, or hard prune every 3 to 4 years.
Francis Mason Abelia Spacing
As a mature shrub, the Francis Mason Abelia can reach 3-6 feet tall and wide. A plant spacing of around 48 inches will allow this shrub to fill out over time.
