With persistent pinkish-white pom-pom blooms from July to October, heat and drought resistance, and strong, upright growth, French Cabaret Blush Hibiscus (Hibiscus syriacus French Cabaret™ Blush) is the cream of the crop. This shrub grows tall and relatively narrow, reaching 5-8 feet tall and 4-7 feet wide when mature. The flower buds emerge deep pink and open in a double bloom with layers of blush pink and white. Hibiscus blooms typically have a light fragrance as well, making them attractive shrubs to plant near patios and porches.
The French Cabaret Blush Hibiscus is low maintenance and ideal for privacy and pollinators alike. Planted in full sun, this deer-resistant shrub is fast growing, quickly becoming a tall blooming hedge or standalone beauty. Once established, French Cabaret Blush is drought tolerant as well, making it even more worry-free. In the winter, once French Cabaret Blush has dropped its leaves, seed pods will remain, creating a bit of winter interest and texture.
French Cabaret™ Blush Hibiscus Care
Plant the French Cabaret Blush Hibiscus in full sun where it can get at least 6 hours of sun a day. This shrub grows well in average soil and needs regular watering in its first year. To plant it, dig a hole the same depth and twice the width of the root ball. After its first year in the garden, French Cabaret is drought tolerant, requiring infrequent water but benefitting from deep watering in hotter, drier months.
Younger Hibiscus plants require little maintenance, growing well with minor pruning and shaping. Once French Cabaret has matured, it is tolerant of heavy pruning to limit its spread and height. This shrub can be allowed to grow wild and willowy or can be shaped, depending on your preference. Deadheading flowers is not necessary with this particular Hibiscus, as it will continue to bloom on its own regardless. This shrub is easier to over-fertilize than under-fertilize, so it is important to feed it low-dose fertilizer only when it is showing signs of nutrient deficiencies, such as a lack of blooms (if lighting is adequate).
French Cabaret™ Blush Hibiscus Spacing
To grow this Hibiscus on its own, plant it about 4-7+ feet away from other plants, allowing the shrub to grow to its natural size. When creating a seamless hedge, plant French Cabaret 3-4 feet apart. You can grow French Cabaret in a large container for a year or two before it outgrows the space; it is recommended to bring potted plants into a protected garage in the winter to ensure their survival.
