Featuring variegated, succulent leaves etched in beige, Frosted Fire Stonecrop Sedum provides interest to landscapes and containers year-round. Showy, dense clusters of pale yellow-green florets bloom rosy-pink in summer and fall. Also known as Sedum Autumn Charm™ 'Frosted Fire', Hylotelephium spectabile 'Frosted Fire', and syn. Sedum spectabile, this perennial grows to a maximum height of 12 to 15 inches and spread of 15 to 18 inches. Assembled in bouquets, this superb cut-flower’s beauty can be appreciated indoors. Frosted Fire also makes a great selection for dried-flower arrangements to extend its indoor interest.
Frosted Fire Stonecrop Sedum’s rosy blooms attract plenty of pollinators including butterflies and bees. Tolerating nutrient-deficient soils and drought, this upright, mound-forming, perennial is versatile. Disease, deer, and rabbit resistant, too, this selection faces minimal threats. Native to Asia, its low-maintenance regimen makes it a wonderful choice for busy people wanting to enhance borders, beds, and containers year round with showy flowers and foliage.
Frosted Fire Stonecrop Sedum Care
Plant Frosted Fire Stonecrop Sedum in the spring. Choose a location getting at least 6 hours of direct sun with dry, loose, well-draining soil. To avert fungal disease, this succulent should never rest in standing water. If needed, amend the soil with compost or sand to increase its ability to drain well. Frosted Fire Stonecrop Sedum is not particular about soil pH. This perennial needs weekly watering until established. Afterward, it can be left alone unless the weather is dry and hot for an extended period. Tolerating nutrient-deficient soil, this showy perennial rarely needs fertilizing.
Other than trimming dead, diseased, and/or damaged stems and foliage during the growing season, Frosted Fire Stonecrop Sedum does not require much pruning. How you choose to prepare this plant for overwintering depends on whether you want it to continue providing interest during the winter months or you want a neater landscape. If you prefer your yard to be tidier, then cut this perennial back to a few inches above the soil after the first heavy frost. If you want this succulent to be a source of food for birds, however, leave it alone until early spring when you can cut it back to prepare for new growth.
Frosted Fire Stonecrop Sedum Spacing
Whether grown as a thriller in a container or en masse in a border or bed, Frosted Fire Stonecrop Sedum provides color, texture, and dimension. If grouping this long-blooming showstopper, space plants at least 15 inches apart. Add companion plants such as asters, black-eyed susan, and Russian sage to create nice cut-flower gardens.
