Growing Zones
Consider Fulda Glow as the improved version of Dragon’s Blood Sedum. Fulda Glow has bronzy-red and green foliage that seems to change as the plant grows through the summer. Then in July, the vibrant magenta flowers appear and make the perfect attractor for late-season, native pollinators. This tough-growing Sedum is easy to care for and requires little maintenance. The intense coloring improves during the summer and remains all winter.
Also known as Sedum spurium, Fulda Glow will grow well in any hard-to-plant spots in the garden. Along the top of a wall, next to a driveway or sidewalk, or in between patio pavers are all great spots to tuck this durable groundcover. Fulda Glow Sedum looks great in hanging baskets and will eventually tumble down the sides. Pair this succulent with hot-season annuals like Lantana, Osteospermum, and Sweet Potato Vine.
Fulda Glow Sedum Care
Sedum needs full sun and fast-draining soil to grow well. Planting Fulda Glow in a part shade position is acceptable if there are more than 4 hours of direct sun a day. Provide water for the first growing season to encourage good root development. Provide Sedum with 1 inch of water per week over either 2 or 3 sessions. After the first year, the plants will be well established and drought tolerant. Fertilizing is rarely necessary. Sedum will perform better with a thin, 1-inch layer of organic compost spread over the root zone in spring.
No pruning is necessary for Fulda Glow Sedum, although it is easily cut back if it outgrows a designated area. No deadheading is needed either. Sedums are self-cleaning succulents. Propagation is easy and can be done anytime from spring to fall. Either dig up sections of the plant to relocate or cut off stems and quickly replant in moist soil. You will know the new plants have transplanted successfully when new growth begins. Fulda Gold is hardy in USDA growing zones 3-8 and evergreen in the warmest zones.
Spacing Fulda Glow Sedum
Fulda Glow Sedum grows to a compact 3-4 inches tall and 18-24 inches wide at maturity. Plant multiple Sedums 18 inches apart center on center. You can space plants much closer together in containers. A 10-inch diameter pot will hold three plants easily.
