Are you looking for a hardworking ground cover that has great spring AND fall color? Presenting Galadriel Red Barrenwort. This is a variety of Epimedium that has lovely pink flowers early in the spring, wonderful heart shaped foliage through the summer, and fiery orange and red foliage in the autumn. Not a true evergreen, it nonetheless gives year-round interest. Epimedium adds much needed color in woodland settings in the shadiest of situations.
Galadriel Red Barrenwort is on the tall side for a ground cover. With a height of 12 inches and a spread of 12-18 inches, it will quickly fill in areas under trees and in other shady areas. Deer leave the foliage alone as do rabbits. Epimediums can be used in a wide variety of soil conditions. Thriving in either moist shade or dry shade.
Galadriel Red Barrenwort Care
Epimedium is spread by rhizomes and is easily divided for moving or to control the area that it is growing in. It is not fussy about soil pH and will tolerate more acidic soils well. No extra fertilizing is needed when planted in a woodland type setting and mulched well with leaves in fall. If this is not possible, then all that is needed is a slow release, balanced fertilizer applied as new growth appears in the spring. Established areas of Epimedium only require extra irrigation during very hot spells in the summer.
Red Barrenwort blooms before new foliage emerges in the spring. This is the time to carefully remove the dead stems from the previous year. Leaving the old foliage over the winter gives shelter to small animals and birds in the winter.
Galadriel Red Barrenwort Spacing
This Epimedium has a height of 8-12 inches and a spread of 12-18 inches. To create an evenly spaced ground cover, plant at 12 inches on the center of the plants. Planting in groups of 3 and 5 in a zigzag pattern helps an area to fill in quickly.
