Garden Girls® Fancy Girl Phlox (Phlox paniculata 'Fancy Girl') draws attention with softly shaded pink blooms that include a dark pink eye and a white halo. Its compact height of about 30 inches suits both small gardens and larger landscapes. Dense foliage resists mildew, maintaining a pristine look throughout summer. The sweetly fragrant flowers also appeal to hummingbirds and butterflies.
This North American native remains a reliable performer in heat and humidity, holding its shape and color deep into the season. Its sweet fragrance and compact growth habit make it a delightful candidate for cottage gardens, borders, or massed planting. It is an excellent rebloomer that produces new waves of color if spent flowers are removed. We've found that this variety also shows impressive mildew resistance, helping it stay attractive when other phlox plants begin to suffer.
Garden Girls® Fancy Girl Phlox Care
Plant in rich, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH for optimal growth. Place in full sun, aiming for at least six hours of direct light per day. Maintain moderate watering and fertilize lightly every other month to support ongoing blooms. Avoid overhead sprinkling to reduce the risk of powdery mildew on leaves and stems.
Light thinning in spring encourages better air circulation, which further deters mildew. Clip away faded flower clusters to promote fresh growth and reduce self-seeding. Mulching around the base provides insulation during winter and helps retain moisture in hotter weather. When grown in containers, use a pot with good drainage to keep roots healthy. Shift potted phlox to a sheltered spot if harsh frosts are forecast.
Garden Girls® Fancy Girl Phlox Spacing
Place each plant 20 to 24 inches apart to allow the foliage to maintain a neat, upright form. If you prefer container gardening, choose a pot at least 12 inches wide to accommodate root growth without crowding.
