Tall garden phlox promises such fantastic, in-your-face summer color, but its proclivity to powdery mildew has made many gardeners pass it by. Party Girl changes all that. She is part of the new Garden Girls series that offers strong mildew resistance and reblooming flower power, making an invitation to the garden party a sure thing. Party Girl’s flowers are a lovely combo of white winking with a raspberry eye, blooming from midsummer on. Bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies will flock to them, and they make a good cut flower, too.
Party Girl grows in an upright clump, approximately 32 inches by 32 inches. She’ll be the life of the party in a summer patio container or raised bed, will shine as a color bridge in the mixed border, or would make a striking swath of long-lasting color massed in a long bed or a hillside.
Garden Girls Party Girl Phlox Care
Party Girl’s favorite hangout is in full sun, with good air circulation, in average to fertile quality soil that is neutral to acidic in ph. She will still flower in partial shade, but take care not to crowd the plants, which may inadvertently invite mildew-promoting conditions. Consistent watering is key, especially while the plants are putting down roots for the first seasons in your garden, but watering at the roots is better than watering the leaves from overhead.
Deadheading promotes more flowers, so cut as many bouquets as you like. As to fertilizing, you don’t want to overdo it; maybe every other month would be enough.
Garden Girls Party Girl Phlox Spacing
32 inches is a minimum spacing we’d recommend, because crowding can encourage powdery mildew. In partial shade, be more generous.
