Growing Zones
At nearly 3 foot high, the two-tone pink flowers of Garden Girls Uptown Girl Phlox (Phlox paniculata) really stand out in the landscape. Create a beautiful border with a line of these garden girls to line a pathway or patio, anywhere you can fully enjoy their fragrance in summer. Then, sit back and share your enjoyment with the bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds that this North American native attracts.
This tall phlox is cold hardy to zone 3 and heat tolerant to zone 8, and can grow in sun to partial sun, so it is a versatile flowering plant for most any landscape. The light-pink flowers have darker pink centers and appear in rounded clusters. Plant one as a thriller in a container or as a mass planting for an explosion of pink in summer. After flowers fade, the dark green leaves still add a lush appeal and are resistant to disease.
Garden Girls Uptown Girl Phlox Care
Phlox are adaptable natives, but perform best in soil that is average to fertile and drains well. The plant prefers slightly acidic or neutral pH in the soil. Add plenty of water when planting, and amend the planting area by adding some organic matter like compost to enrich sandy soil. Water regularly to prevent the soil from drying out too much. Give Uptown Girl a balanced fertilizer every few weeks during flowering.
To keep soil moist, add organic mulch a few inches thick around the soil, but not up against the plant. This keeps the soil cool and moist. Deadheading flowers after they fade can encourage more bloom. After the first killing frost in fall, cut stems back to a few inches above the soil. If the plant spreads too much, divide it every few years.
Garden Girls Uptown Girl Phlox Spacing
Be sure to give your phlox room to grow and to get air circulation. If planting in rows or mass plantings, place each phlox 28 to 32 inches from center to center.
