Growing Zones
The large multicolor blooms of the Garden Party Hydrangea will definitely be something to celebrate when they burst forth from late spring onwards. Showy 8 to 10-inch flowers develop in shades of pink or blue depending on the soil pH and continue throughout the growing season. This hydrangea blooms during its first year and features more blooms than most hydrangeas. Large green foliage develops on sturdy branches that form a mound up to 3 to 5 feet tall.
This easy-to-grow hydrangea is not only deer resistant but also cold hardy down to USDA zone 4. Its flowers are either pink in alkaline soil or blue in acidic soil. It blooms all summer to the first frost. Small enough to be grown in a container, it is also highly effective for a foundation or border planting. Its ornate blooms are also exquisite when used as a cut flower.
Garden Party Hydrangea Care
The Garden Party Hydrangea performs best when grown in partial or dappled shade and in fertile, moist and well-drained soil. A consistently moist, but not saturated soil is needed to support steady growth and healthy foliage. Fertilize with an all-purpose or hydrangea-specific, slow-release feed in early spring.
Minimal pruning is needed to care for the Garden Party Hydrangea. In early spring, simply remove any dead or damaged branches and mulch with organic matter to prevent moisture loss. This hydrangea blooms on both new and old wood, so pruning in spring will not reduce later blooms. Container-grown specimens will require more frequent irrigation to keep the soil from drying out.
Garden Party Hydrangea Spacing
Over time the Garden Party Hydrangea will grow to 3 to 5 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide. Plant at a spacing of 3 to 6 feet apart depending on how defined you would like the shrubs to look.
