You'll be mesmerized by this beauty once you lay your eyes on the large, cloud-like flowers of the Gardenia Peony. Compact buds open to reveal layers and layers of ruffled creamy white petals with light pink accents. The large blooms of the Paeonia lactiflora 'Gardenia' open in late spring. The flowers are the main attraction of this plant, but the foliage continues to provide color and visual interest after the flowers fade. The greenery makes an excellent backdrop for smaller flowering plants that bloom in summer and fall.
Feature the Gardenia Peony in a border or mixed bed. Line a fence with a row of these perennials or use this peony as a focal point in a landscape. The large blooms make superb and long-lasting cut flowers. Use a support or tie the stems up because the large blooms will weigh the branches down, especially after it rains. The Gardenia Peony is an herbaceous perennial that grows in zones 3 through 8.
Gardenia Peony Care
Choose a spot with full sun and rich, loamy soil that is moist and well drained. Water weekly, especially during a dry period. Apply a balanced fertilizer in the spring, summer, and fall to support growth.
Deadhead the plant to encourage more flowers during the bloom cycle. Remove the spent blooms after flowering is complete to maintain a tidy appearance. Leave the foliage in place for the rest of the growing season. Trim the stems to ground level after the first frost.
Gardenia Peony Spacing
The Gardenia Peony stands 2 to 3 feet tall and wide. Air circulation is critical to prevent powdery mildew and other fungal infections, so space plants at least 3 feet apart.
