Growing Zones
While the Garnet Japanese Maple is a dwarf tree, this beauty packs a lot of style into its compact form. The Acer palmatum dissectum stands 6 to 7 feet tall and features thread-like palmate foliage. The leaves are a bright, vivid red in the spring and transition to a deep purple, garnet-red by summer. By fall, when the weather turns chilly, the foliage takes on a vibrant orange. This is a deciduous tree, and the leaves drop during the fall.
This compact tree has a single trunk and an upright growth habit. The dense canopy has a spreading form, with the branches running parallel to the ground. The Garnet Japanese Maple can be used as a focal point or to partially shield a patio or outdoor space. Songbirds frequent the branches and hide within the foliage.
Garnet Japanese Maple Care
The Garnet Japanese Maple does best in a spot that receives partial shade to full sun. The tree prefers a location with afternoon shade when grown in a location with hot summer weather. Water this ornamental maple tree weekly and increase the watering frequency during a dry spell. This tree performs best in moist, rich, acidic to neutral, and well-drained soil.
This tree is low maintenance and does not require pruning. Trim dead or damaged growth as needed, and shape the tree while it is dormant in the winter, when the framework is exposed. Feed this tree in the spring using a slow-release fertilizer.
Garnet Japanese Maple Spacing
The Garnet Japanese Maple stands 6 to 7 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide. Space trees 8 feet apart from other trees and 4 feet away from buildings.
