Eupatorium maculatum is a native plant of North America and one of the best plants for attracting pollinators and other wildlife. Joe Pye Weed ‘Gateway’ is a new introduction that has a more compact and sturdy structure while still delivering the height and gratefulness of the native variety. Bees and butterflies are attracted by its nectar. Birds will flock to the seed heads through the fall and winter. Joe Pye Weed ‘Gateway’ is at home in a meadow, as the focal point of a cultivated flower bed or on the edges of a rain garden. Joe Pye Weed is always sure to get attention from animals and humans alike.
Eupatorium maculatum ‘Gateway’ has large 6 foot stems supporting large, frothy flower heads that last into the winter if not deadheaded. Other native plants such as grasses and flowers like Helianthus are great partners for Joe Pye Weed. Eupatorium maculatum is useful as a single specimen plant or planted in large drifts for a more naturalized effect. Deer and rabbit resistant.
Gateway Joe Pye Weed Care
Joe Pye Weed ‘Gateway” likes a neutral pH soil that is not heavily fertilized. It will bloom best in full shade, although part shade is perfectly ok for this hard working plant. It tolerates a wide variety of moisture levels. Anything from evenly moist to wet soil is tolerated. Does not like dry soil in the summer and may require extra watering in a very hot summer. Plant hardiness zones range from 4 - 8.
Joe Pye Weed ‘Gateway’ will not need much maintenance to keep looking good. Since this variety is bred to be sturdier and slightly more compact than other varieties, very little staking will be needed. Joe Pye Weed is easily divided when needed to help rejuvenate the plant. Division is best done in the early Fall after blooming. The blooms are loved by birds, bees and butterflies and also make a long-lived cut flower. The arrow shaped foliage and dark colored stems add interest to floral arrangements. Joe Pye Weed looks great through the winter and provides food and shelter for birds and beneficial insects.
Gateway Joe Pye Weed Spacing
Eupatorium requires a spacing of 2 feet apart. These herbaceous perennials are quick growing at the beginning of the spring and should not be pinched back if longer stems are wanted. This is the perfect plant for both encouraging wildlife and giving your garden an interesting focal point.
