The Gatsby Pink® Hydrangea is an oakleaf hydrangea from Proven Winners ColorChoice®. The amazing shrub has extremely white flowers that turn pink later in the summer. The foliage also turns from green during the spring and summer to a dark red in the fall. Creating a colorful show in the garden for several months!
The bush also has very big flowers compared to other oakleaf hydrangea shrubs. We recommend using these shrubs in gardens as a statement piece, or as part of a woodland landscape!
The Gatsby Pink Hydrangea is also native to North America. Meaning it should take less maintenance and also be more beneficial to pollinating insects! These shrubs are also salt tolerant, and great in hellstrips or landscapes next to roadways.
Gatsby Pink Hydrangea Care
Plant these shrubs in well-drained soil to help prevent root rot. But, we recommend adding mulch to the base of the bush to help retain moisture and help protect the roots in harsh winter environments. The best location for these shrubs is somewhere with morning sunlight, but some shade in the afternoon hours. Especially in hot summer days and in southern climates like zones 8 and 9. If you do plant in a full-sun location, provide extra water during hotter days and periods of drought. The leaves will start to wilt when you need to do this.
If you prune the Gatsby Pink Hydrangea, do so right after the first bloom in mid-summer. That ensure you will not cut off flower buds for the following year. Never prune more than a ⅓ of the total length of the branch. We also recommend providing extra protection during winter months, especially in colder climates like zones 5 and 6. You should try and protect the branches and roots, to ensure a shrub full of blooms the following season.
Fertilize the shrub using slow release fertilizer in early spring. Only do this after the bush has had a year to develop in the ground or planter.
Gatsby Pink Hydrangea Spacing
The Gatsby Pink hydrangea should be planted 8 feet apart, center on center. If you plan on creating an oakleaf hydrangea hedge and really wowing your neighbors, we recommend that you plant around 6 feet apart, center on center. Only very large garden planters are big enough for these hydrangeas. However, that is another option to have something truly unique in your garden, that also has 3 seasons of interest!
