The Genie Magnolia is a hardy plant that features absolutely striking blooms during the spring and summer. The buds are a dark red that almost appears black and open to display rich deep pink petals with hints of purple. The tulip-shaped flowers have an extended bloom time, and the plant will rebloom in the midsummer, so you can continue to enjoy these beauties. The flowers bloom early before the foliage appears, giving this shrub a dramatic but still striking look.
This shrub has an upright, conical growth habit and is more compact than other Magnolia cultivars, making it great for areas with limited space. Feature this plant in a bed, border, or container or use it as a specimen. The blooms are beautiful but also very fragrant with a delicate scent, so place near a window or outdoor space so you can enjoy the flowers as much as possible.
Genie Magnolia Care
Plant the Genie Magnolia in rich, slightly acidic, moist soil that promotes drainage. This plant requires full sun with some afternoon shade. Water weekly for the first year or two, and after the plant is acclimated, it will need water a couple of times each month during the growing season.
Prune as needed during midsummer after the plant is done blooming. Avoid fertilizing Magnolia plants during the first year, but starting in the second growing season, you can feed the Genie Magnolia using a balanced fertilizer every other month.
Genie Magnolia Spacing
This cultivar is upright but relatively compact at 10 to 13 feet tall and 5 to 10 feet wide. Space plants as close as 5 to 6 feet apart to create a dense look while still allowing each plant room to grow.
