No other plant is more sought after for a cottage Garden as the climbing Clematis. Gisella™ Clematis has the beautiful large blooms of older Clematis, but also boasts a more compact shape and ever blooming capability. Gorgeous rosey-pink flowers cover this climber from the earliest part of the summer through to the last frost. Yes, that’s right. This one blooms all summer. The shorter height makes it ideal for a mixed planting in containers for decks or the front step. Staking is still important, but the plant has a much more shrub-like shape.

This clematis is deer and rabbit resistant. Hummingbirds and butterflies are attracted to the sweet nectar as are other beneficial pollinators. Gisella™ would look great planted near climbing roses other Clematis that may have a shorter bloom period. The soft pink of Gisella™ will blend into any softly colored Cottage garden palette.

Gisella™ Clematis Care

Clematis like to have cool feet and sunny heads. This means that they like to be in full sun to bloom the best, but also need to have either well mulched roots or companion plantings as their base to help conserve moisture. A well drained, but also moist soil is definitely required to keep Clematis happy. Fertilizing should be done in the early spring as the new growth appears. A slow release, well balanced feed  will help support the masses of blooms this plant produces.

Pruning of Clematis can be a little intimidating for new and old gardeners. There are three groups that all Clematis fall into. Gisella™ is in Group 3 which is really the easiest to manage. No pruning is done until new growth emerges in the very early spring. All growth is cut back to new buds about 1 foot above the ground. This will encourage strongly branched vines. Make sure to help the new growth find the trellis or other support Gisella™ Clematis is growing on.

Gisella™ Clematis Spacing

Spacing of climbing vines is not very important. Clematis is deeply rooted and appreciates having other perennials planted closely around its base to provide shade to its roots. The overall height of Gisella™ Clematis is 5 feet with a width of 2 feet, Container grown Clematis do better in deeper pots rather than shallow wide pots.
