Glow Girl® Pink Birchleaf Spirea (Spiraea betulifolia ‘SMNSBDOU’) brings lasting foliage color to cold-climate gardens. New growth emerges bright yellow and matures to chartreuse, holding its tone well through summer without scorching. In late spring, clusters of soft pink to blush-white flowers gather at the tips of the stems, adding contrast to the golden leaves. By autumn, the foliage shifts to shades of orange and red for a second season of color. We like that it keeps its color and compact form even after harsh winters, outperforming many traditional gold-leaf spireas.
This selection is derived from a North American native species known for durability and winter hardiness. It forms a dense, rounded mound about 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, making it useful for foundation beds, low hedges, and front-of-border plantings. Deer tend to leave it alone, and established plants handle dry stretches with little setback. Use it in mass plantings for a sweep of color, tuck it into cottage-style borders, or feature it in a large container where foliage contrast is needed all season.
Glow Girl® Pink Birchleaf Spirea Care
Plant in full sun for the strongest foliage color and best flower production. It will tolerate part sun, but at least five to six hours of direct light daily is recommended. This spirea adapts to loam, sandy soil, or amended clay, provided drainage is good. It performs well in slightly acidic to mildly alkaline soil, roughly pH 6.0 to 7.5. Water deeply after planting and continue regular irrigation during the first growing season. Once established, it requires supplemental water only during extended dry periods. Fertilizer is optional; if growth appears weak, apply a balanced, slow-release shrub fertilizer in early spring.
Glow Girl® blooms on old wood. Prune after flowering if shaping is desired. Light shearing can encourage a tidier outline, and thinning older stems every few years will rejuvenate the plant. Deadheading is not required, but removing spent flower clusters can promote a small second flush and fresh foliage. In colder zones, a layer of mulch around the root zone helps moderate soil temperature through winter.
Glow Girl® Pink Birchleaf Spirea Spacing
Space plants 2½ to 3 feet apart for a solid hedge or grouped effect. In mixed borders, allow 3 feet between plants so the rounded habit can develop without crowding. For containers, choose a pot at least 18 to 20 inches wide with well-drained potting mix. Pair with blue fescue, salvia, or hardy geranium for contrast in texture and color.
