Growing Zones
The Glow Pop™ Japanese Holly or Ilex crenata is a fast-growing, low-maintenance shrub that makes a significant visual impact despite its compact size. Ovate leaves grow along upright stems, and their bright green color makes a big impact. New leaves have a bronzy hue, but mature leaves are almost fluorescent green. The small size prevents this boldly colored shrub from overwhelming a landscape.
The compact growth habit is ideal for areas with limited space or a container. Create an evergreen foundation planting, low hedge, or focal point in a mixed bed. Make a bold statement with a mass planting or grow a single shrub in a container to frame an entryway, garage doors, or steps leading from a deck to a yard space. Glow Pop™ Japanese Holly in zones 5 through 9.
Glow Pop™ Japanese Holly Care
Plant Japanese Holly in part shade to full sun. Increased sunlight will increase the vibrancy of the green foliage color. This evergreen needs fertile soil that is acidic, moist and well drained. Water new plants consistently, but established plants only need water during a dry spell. Apply a slow-release fertilizer or a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant each spring.
The Glow Pop™ Japanese Holly has a naturally rounded form, but it can handle a more manicured look if that’s your preference. Shape the shrub as necessary in the spring before new growth emerges.
Glow Pop™ Japanese Holly Spacing
Glow Pop™ Japanese Holly shrubs reach 2 to 3 feet tall and wide. Space shrubs 2 to 3 feet apart, center on center, when creating a hedge or continuous planting.
