Growing Zones
The dark pink to red blooms of the Glowing Embers Hydrangea are made to set your borders ablaze. A Hydrangea macrophylla, 'Glowing Embers' is a compact shrub that grows to around 4 to 5 feet tall over time. Large mophead flowers contrast strongly against its large and lush green leaves in mid to late summer.
Considered a low-maintenance shrub, the Glowing Embers Hydrangea is easy to grow and care for when given the right growing conditions. This large leaf hydrangea is winter hardy and suitable for growing in zones 5 through 9. Since it remains relatively compact, Glowing Embers is perfect for adding to a mixed border or for growing in a large container.
Glowing Embers Hydrangea Care
Unlike some other hydrangeas, Glowing Embers can tolerate both full sun and partial shade. When it comes to soil preference, it grows best in a moisture-retentive yet well-drained substrate and needs regular irrigation to keep the soil moist. Fertilize in the spring with a balanced, slow-release feed.
The Glowing Embers Hydrangea blooms on old wood and should be pruned immediately after flowering to preserve next year’s flowers. Mulching annually will not only help lock in moisture but also help prevent weeds from appearing.
Glowing Embers Hydrangea Spacing
The Glowing Embers Hydrangea can reach a mature size of 4 to 5 feet tall and wide. A spacing of 4 to 5 feet apart is advisable when planting out en masse.
