Growing Zones
Glowstick Red Hot Poker is an improved variety of the traditional Kniphofia uvaria. Glowstick is far more compact and dainty compared to older types and perfect for growing in smaller gardens or even containers on a deck or patio. The pale yellow color of the flower spike is easier to include in established garden borders while being just as attractive to native and beneficial pollinators. The foliage is also finer and more delicate, giving Glowstick a more refined profile.
Red Hot Pokers are famed for their resistance to pests or diseases. This low-maintenance plant will spread moderately without becoming a nuisance and is far easier to dig up than other Kniphofia varieties. Deer and rabbits do not even give this perennial a second glance. This plant needs average soil moisture to sustain vigorous blooming. The foliage generally remains evergreen where it is winter hardy in the USDA growing zones 6a-9b.
Glowstick Red Hot Poker Care
Plant Glowstick in full sun where the soil is on the acidic side of the pH scale. This plant grows well in average to sandy soil with excellent drainage year-round. Water the plants consistently for the first season to ensure a robust root system. Watering with soaker hoses or drip irrigation is a good way to keep the foliage dry while targeting the roots.
Deadheading during the flowering season will keep the plants tidy, as spent flower spikes can become top-heavy. Removing spent flowers will also prolong the flowering period by reducing seed production. Leave as much foliage on the plant over the winter as possible. This helps to protect the growing crown during the winter. Only remove foliage that is very brown or turning black. The old top growth can be removed in the spring as new sprouts emerge.
Glowstick Red Hot Poker Spacing
Glowstick Red Hot Poker is much smaller than other varieties, reaching only 30 inches high (in flower) and about 19 inches wide. Space plants 21-24 inches from each other in a garden bed for a dense appearance. Container-grown plants will require a pot with at least a 14-inch diameter and a heavy base to counteract the top-heavy flowers.
