Growing Zones
Gnom Juniper has an extremely upright habit that resembles varieties of larger Cypress. With its shorter and sturdier frame, this vertical Juniper is much more suited to the smaller garden in colder climates. The silvery green foliage and branches have more resistance to collapsing and splitting under heavy snowfalls. The characteristic blue berries remain for most of the year. Gnom Juniper tolerates salt spray and can be grown near the ocean in an open windy site.
The shape of this evergreen conifer is naturally tall and straight with minimal pruning. It is also deer and rabbit resistant. Gnom Juniper gives a formal feel when planted as a widely spaced hedge or grown in a container at the entrance to your house.
Gnom Juniper Care
Juniper likes a full sun situation, but will tolerate light shade or late afternoon shade. Moist, well drained soil is ideal. The pH can range from acidic to alkaline. LIttle to no fertilizer is needed. Basically this is a very low maintenance addition to your landscape.
Gnom Juniper is a very slow grower that rarely needs pruning to keep its upright form. A mulching of leaves or organic compost in the fall is all that is needed to keep Gnom happy. Regular watering as this shrub establishes is necessary. The shallow roots of evergreen conifers are easily dried out while they are young
Gnom Juniper Spacing
Evergreen conifers like to have good air circulation around the whole plant. This helps to reduce incidences of mildews and fungal diseases. Gnom Juniper reaches 10-12 feet in height and stays a slim 3-4 feet in width. When planted with other Junipers, a spacing of 4 feet on center is fine.
