The Gold Cascade Deodar Cedar (Cedrus deodara 'Gold Cascade') is a slow-growing, evergreen conifer known for its cascading branches and striking two-tone foliage — golden yellow on top and light green on the lower and inner branches. You can train it into a graceful, narrow weeping tree form, or let it spread into a low, mounding specimen. At maturity, this cedar reaches about 8 feet tall and up to 15 feet wide, with a growth rate of 4 to 6 inches per year. Its year-round color and sculptural form make it an excellent focal point or accent in the landscape.

Gold Cascade is a low-maintenance conifer that works well as a specimen tree, mixed border anchor, or privacy planting. Its dense, evergreen foliage provides four-season interest, and the golden new growth is especially luminous in spring. The cascading, weeping branches give it a refined, elegant appearance that stands out against other landscape plants. It is also deer resistant and tolerant of drought once established, adapting quickly to a range of garden settings.

Gold Cascade Deodar Cedar Care

Plant your Gold Cascade Deodar Cedar in full sun to partial sun in well-drained soil. It performs best in moist, average soil but will tolerate somewhat dry conditions once established. Water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant settle in, then reduce frequency as the tree matures. Fertilizing is generally not necessary; however, an application of organic compost in the spring can support faster growth in poor soils.

Gold Cascade requires very little pruning and looks its best when left to grow naturally. If you are growing it as a staked tree form, check the stake regularly and remove it once the trunk is strong enough to support itself. You may selectively prune to shape or maintain size, but avoid heavy cuts. Remove any damaged or crossing branches as needed to keep the plant healthy.

Gold Cascade Deodar Cedar Spacing

Space Gold Cascade Deodar Cedar at least 8 to 15 feet from other plants and structures to allow for its wide, spreading habit. It works well as a standalone specimen near a patio, in a large mixed border, or as part of a grouped planting. Because the canopy sits low to the ground, avoid planting it where foot traffic or adjacent plants might crowd the cascading branches. When growing in a container, start with a pot at least 14 inches in diameter, and size up every 2 years as the roots fill in to prevent crowding.
