Gold Heart Bleeding Heart (Dicentra spectabilis) is a unique twist on the classic and elegant version of a Bleeding Heart perennial. It's got the same long stalk of delicate heart-shaped pink and white flowers, but they bloom above golden to chartreuse foliage. Gold Heart performs like this with only partial sun. This is the perfect little plant for the front of a shady garden bed or as a partly shaded container's filler. Gold Heart is hardy to the cold of zone 3 and tolerant of heat up to zone 9.

Hummingbirds and bees love Gold Heart Bleeding Heart blooms, and so will anyone who sees the flower growing in your garden or added to a cut flower arrangement or bouquet. Plant a few in special garden locations to add delicate color and be sure to put at least one in a raised bed or container where you can be at eye level with the flower stalk. The plants reach about 2 feet height and 2 to 3 feet wide. Bleeding hearts are good focal points in wooded gardens, and deer tend to avoid the plants.

Gold Heart Bleeding Heart Care

Plant Gold Heart Bleeding Heart in a partly shady to shady spot and watch it grow. It will flower best with morning sun and the golden leaves might be a little more chartreuse than golden if planted in full shade. Avoid placing your bleeding heart in afternoon sun in warmer regions. The plants need consistent watering. Remove stems with faded flowers for a second bloom in regions with cooler summers. Apply a small amount of balanced or slow-release fertilizer around the outside of the plant in early spring.

Gold Heart Bleeding Heart Spacing

Gold Heart Bleeding Heart is an excellent companion to other shade lovers such as columbines and ferns. Space your bleeding heart plants about 2 to 3 feet from one another or other plants to give them room to grow.
