Rhododendrons in yellow shades are not very common in home gardens, but they make a great contrast to the pinks and reds of spring. Gold Prinz is a beautiful shade of buttery yellow with spots of maroon inside the flowers and would make for a stunning display mixed with deep pink Azaleas, maroon red Tulips and apple blossom pink Hellebores.
Gold Prinz is a smaller growing Rhododendron that is much wider than tall. This shrub would make for a lovely low growing informal hedge or grouped with other Rhododendrons in a shady woodland garden bed. The prolific trusses of flowers last for weeks in June. Beneficial pollinators are magically attracted to the bell shaped flowers, which are also great for cut flowers, lasting for many days in a vase. The evergreen foliage is also a great addition to a flower arrangement any time of the year.
Gold Prinz Rhododendron Care
Rhododendrons are at home in any partly shaded site that also has constantly moist, well drained soil. The pH needs to be on the acidic side to keep the foliage a lovely dark green. Fertilizing with a slow release food blended for acid loving plants should be applied early in the spring. Mulching with organic compost or leaves will help the soil to be more moisture retentive while helping to insulate the roots from harsh winter cold. Evergreen shrubs may need to be planted in a spot that provides protection from drying winter winds of the lower hardiness zones.
Pruning Gold Prinz only needs to be done after the blooms finish in late June. A light deadheading will help this shrub to keep its short and sturdy shape. Pruning branches back hard is rarely needed for this small Rhododendron. Watering with soaker hoses or drip irrigation systems will provide the supplemental moisture these shrubs need in the warmer hardiness zones. In the hottest zones, afternoon shade is very important to keep the foliage from getting sunburned.
Gold Prinz Rhododendron Spacing
Gold Prinz will add lovely color and shape to any garden plan. Cottage Garden, Asian inspired garden or even a container garden on a shady patio. The compact height of 30-36 inches and a width of 36-42 inches makes this shrub easy to plant with other medium sized shrubs. Space the plants at 3 feet on center to ensure good air circulation.
