Growing Zones
Hostas are known as leafy, easy-to-maintain plants that thrive in shady corners of a yard, and the Gold Standard Hosta does not disappoint. The broad, oval leaves narrow to a point and have dark green margins surrounding light green centers. Throughout the growing season, the light green transitions into a yellowish-gold hue. The leaves grow in a rosette formation and create a full and lush appearance. Flower stalks stand above the foliage, and by mid-summer, pink-lavender, bell-shaped flowers bloom.
This leafy plant makes a beautiful foundation planting or can be featured in a bed or border. Hostas are hardy and once established, require little care, making them great for busy or forgetful gardeners. Hummingbirds will frequent the flowers. Grow the Gold Standard Hosta as a perennial in zones 3 through 8.
Gold Standard Hosta Care
Plant the Gold Standard Hosta in partial sun. Hostas grown in morning sun and afternoon shade will develop more intense gold variegation. Grow them in rich, moist soil that is well drained. New plants need regular water, while established plants only need a drink during a dry period. Feed the Gold Standard Hosta in spring using a balanced fertilizer. A layer of organic mulch will further support new growth and retain moisture in the soil.
The flower stalks can be removed after the flowers are done blooming. The greenery can be removed after the first heavy frost or left to protect the crown over winter. Divide hostas every few years as needed in the spring or fall.
Gold Standard Hosta Spacing
The Gold Standard Hosta has a mounded, upright growth habit. Mature plants reach 2 to 3 feet tall and wide. Space plants 2.5 to 3 feet apart for a bold foliage effect.
