Growing Zones
The yellow and green foliage of this Golden Hinoki False Cypress will certainly attract some interest. Also known as Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Aurea', this small evergreen conifer can grow to around 15 to 20 feet tall and is perfect for a smaller garden. It produces two-tone growth that is yellow on the extremities and green within, and provides year-round interest.
The Golden Hinoki False Cypress forms an attractive pyramidal shade. It is low maintenance once established and generally needs little ongoing care. You can plant it at the back of a border to provide a colorful backdrop, or use it to form an unusual windbreak or hedge. This lovely shrub is suitable for growing in hardiness zones 4 to 8.
Golden Hinoki False Cypress Care
The Golden Hinoki False Cypress is happy when grown in full sun to partial shade. It grows best in a fertile and free-draining soil with regular access to moisture. Frequent irrigation is needed for the first few seasons to help this shrub develop a good root system. Feeding with a balanced fertilizer in late winter will help encourage its lush foliage.
Pruning is rarely required as it develops a pleasing shape naturally. That being said, if you need to trim it, you can lightly prune in late winter, making sure not to cut back into the old wood.
Golden Hinoki False Cypress Spacing
When fully grown, the Golden Hinoki False Cypress can reach a height of 15 to 20 feet and a spread of 10 to 12 feet. To form a dense hedge, you can plant at a spacing of around 6 to 8 feet apart.
