You cannot help but admire the golden foliage of the Golden Japanese Sedum. Botanically known as Sedum makinoi 'Ogon', this stonecrop produces tiny golden leaves that form a thick, low-growing mat. Growing 2 to 4 inches tall, the Golden Japanese Sedum is easy to grow and suitable for a variety of planting uses.

The Golden Japanese Sedum tends to grow disease and pest-free, and once established, is even drought and heat tolerant. Furthermore, even rabbits and deer generally leave this stonecrop alone. Sedum is perfect for adding some color to a rock garden, hellstrip, or dry slope. Being small, it can even be planted into a rocky wall or grown in a container.

Golden Japanese Sedum Care

The Golden Japanese Sedum grows best in either full sun or partial shade. It requires free-draining soil as it will not tolerate its roots sitting in water; it will even grow in a rocky or sandy substrate. As a succulent, it does not need regular moisture so it is best to allow the soil to dry out between watering. Fertilization is generally not required.

Pruning is not usually required. However, any leggy stems can be pinched back to encourage new growth. In colder areas, you can pot up this sedum to overwinter indoors.

Golden Japanese Sedum Spacing

When mature, the Golden Japanese Sedum can reach a height and spread of 4 inches by 10 inches. If growing to form ground cover, you can plant Golden Japanese Sedum at a spacing of around 6 to 8 inches apart.
