No other shrub is a s low maintenance and rewarding for 3 seasons of the year as Goldflame Spirea. This deciduous shrub has a naturally compact and mounding shape that sports a virtual kaleidoscope of foliage from early spring through to late fall. The new leaves emerge as shiny bronze which quickly changes to red in the spring. The leaves mature throughout the summer in lemon and lime tones. Cooler weather in the fall brings on the fiery copper and red tones that will compliment any garden setting.

Goldflame Spirea has sprays of frothy pink blooms that will continue all summer if they are deadheaded on a regular basis. Native pollinators are drawn to Spirea in large numbers and the dense foliage is a welcome shelter for other small wildlife. Goldflame will make for a dramatic low growing, informal hedge along a driveway or fenceline. The bright colors contrast and compliment a wide range of perennials and other shrubs. Spirea looks great with Butterfly Bush, Shasta Daisy, Red Twig Dogwood and Rugosa Roses.

Goldflame Spirea Care

Goldflame Spirea will have the best color and grow most vigorously in a full sun site. Early morning or late afternoon shade is suitable. Pirea tolerates all types and textures of soil. Clay, loam or sand is equally good. Excellent drainage is a must as is consistent watering until the shrub is well established. At maturity, Goldflame will be fairly drought tolerant.

Pruning is best done in the early spring as the new growth emerges. Cut out any winter damaged branches along with dead, dying and diseased growth. Fertilizing should also be done early in the spring with a well balanced, slow release food. Regular mulching in the fall with organic compost or leaves will help to enrich the soil over time. Watering with soaker hoses and drip irrigation will help to keep water off the leaves. Goldflame Spirea is resistant to mildews and molds.

Goldflame Spirea Spacing

Goldflame Spirea will look the most dramatic when planted in a large number or as a low growing, unclipped hedge. The mature height and width of Goldflame is 3-4 feet. Space the shrubs at 3 feet on center when planting.
