Goldsturm Black-Eyed Susan, or Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii 'Goldsturm' is a compact perennial with a multitude of branches bearing 3 to 4 inch gold, semi-double flowers that bloom in July through September. These golden petaled flowers have a small, conical, black-button eye and stand on slender green stems above a bevy of deep green foliage. They grow to heights of 2 to 3 feet with a spread of 1 to 2 feet and make excellent cut flowers.
Goldsturm Black-Eyed Susan was awarded the 1999 Perennial Plant of the Year, and has since become a long-blooming, easy-to-grow staple in gardens worldwide. This sunny, bright plant attracts both butterflies and songbirds and is a fantastic low-maintenance option for any budding gardener. Goldsturm Black-Eyed Susan has an erect, fast-growing habit and produces many blooms. It is extremely cold hardy and naturalizes well.
Goldsturm Black-Eyed Susan Care
The ideal conditions for Goldsturm Black-Eyed Susan are in areas with full sun and rich, well-drained soils. However, Black-Eyed Susan can tolerate poor soils and clay. Once established, your Black-Eyed Susan will only occasionally need to be watered, as they are waterwise plants. Fertilize your Goldsturm Black-Eyed Susan with flower and rose food in early spring after the last hard frost. Pinch back blooms to encourage a fuller growing habit. Your Black-Eyed Susan can be divided in early spring or late fall every 4 to 5 years.
Goldsturm Black-Eyed Susan Spacing
Black-Eyed Susan make a colorful, easy-to-maintain border option and work well in containers so long as they receive additional water during hot summer months. Your Black-Eyed Susan should be spaced 18 inches apart when planting. They pair well with Bluebeard and Coneflowers.
