Ogon Golden Variegated Sweet Flag is the perfect, well-behaved ornamental grass every gardener needs. Variegated Sweet Flag stays compact and short and can be used in a mixed seasonal container and the garden bed to accent larger perennials and shrubs. The strappy leaves are colored in thick yellow and deep green stripes, giving a bright overall look to this plant. Acorus gramineus looks like an ornamental grass but is classified as a neutral grass that behaves more like an evergreen perennial, making them less likely to be invasive or heavily self-seeding.
Deer and rabbits rarely bother neutral grass plants, preferring plants with more tender leaves. Acorus gramineus can be very drought tolerant after it matures. However, it also thrives in boggy or pondside gardens, where soils tend to stay wet year-round. This plant's bright coloring and striking architectural shape make it an excellent filler or thriller in mixed containers. Good companion plants include coleus and calibrachoa in equally bright colors. Pair Graceful Grasses® Ogon with other long-blooming perennials in a garden bed, such as asters in the fall or bleeding heart in the spring.
Graceful Grasses® Ogon Golden Variegated Sweet Flag Care
Ogon Sweet Flag prefers to grow in either full sun or part shade and thrives in boggy pondside gardens. Well-draining soil is also acceptable if it holds moisture well or the plants are heavily mulched with organic material. Annual mulching with organic compost will ensure that the soil remains nutrient rich without applying fertilizers. Water container-grown Acorus when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry.
Perennial neutral grasses require little pruning or other maintenance. They are slow growers that look good throughout the year. Lightly prune back any winter-damaged foliage early in the spring. Divide these grass-like plants only in the early spring. The plants will need an entire growing season to recuperate and reestablish their root system before the semi-dormancy of winter.
Graceful Grasses® Ogon Golden Variegated Sweet Flag Spacing
The slow-growing plants will have a mature height of 14 inches and a spread of 12 inches. Space plants 12 inches apart on the center when planting with other perennials or in large numbers. Acorus will require a container of at least 10 inches in diameter.
