Groundcover doesn’t get enough attention it truly deserves. Granita® Raspberry® Hardy Ice Plant will definitely grab your attention and you might just fall in love with it. Delosperma is one of the easiest and most carefree groundcovers available. The best part is that it does not want to take over your garden and it will come back every year. This little plant politely spreads its shimmering green succulent leaves. All Spring and Summer long, profuse blooms of magnificent raspberry-colored flowers cover the ground in a red carpet.
This South African native is exotic and quite functional in the landscape. It can take heat and drought conditions. Rock gardens are a perfect place to display the ice plant’s beauty. Hard to reach areas like slopes are no match for its relentlessness. Delosperma even makes a beautiful indoor succulent houseplant. It may not flower as much as outside but its foliage is just as attractive.
Granita® Raspberry® Hardy Ice Plant Care
All around this is an easy carefree plant. It has average watering needs. Since it is more succulent, make sure that the soil is well-draining and it completely dries out between waterings. Root rot can be an issue if constant moisture persists. In the extreme summer heat, watering once a week can be beneficial and reduce plant stress.
Surviving winter is not a problem in zones 6 to 10 and is considered a perennial in these zones. There may be some dieback overwinter, but expect a full recovery when Spring comes around. Zones lower than 6, treat Delosperma as an annual. Since it wouldn’t be hardy outdoors in those lower zones, Ice plants make great succulent house plants too. Little to no fertilizer is even needed.
Granita® Raspberry® Hardy Ice Plant Spacing
Typically 30 inches of space between plants is all that is needed. Its short sprawling habit will easily fill in gaps between plants to create a carpet effect. If you’re looking for not your typical groundcover, it doesn’t get better than Granita® Raspberry® Hardy Ice Plant.
