Purple-pink petals with a white blotch surround a dark, red eye that contrasts well against the deep green foliage on this fragrant garden phlox. It has an extra long bloom time and flowers from midsummer until fall on plants that can reach a height and width of 18 to 24 inches. This perennial favorite of the cottage garden will easily be your new choice of phlox to grow and is loved by many pollinators as well as hummingbirds.
A compact phlox with tall, strong stems that require no staking and has excellent resistance to powdery mildew. Low maintenance with few disease and insect problems. It is highly tolerant of urban environments, can withstand some drought and heat but should be watered well until established. Plant it in mass in the perennial garden, along the perennial border or in a mixed planting in large pots or containers. Winter hardy to zones 3 to 8. Plants grown in pots or containers would need to be brought indoors in areas where temperatures fall below freezing for extended periods of time. Alternatively, the pots or containers could be stored indoors for the winter in a cool, but sunny area that is above freezing. It is not resistant to deer or other small herbivores. Native to North America.
Grape Lollipop™ Garden Phlox Care
Phlox does best in full sun to partial shade and is best planted in areas where the soil is moist but well-drained and of average fertility, although it is not particular about soil type or pH.
Phlox may be pinched back when the plants reach a height of 6 to 8 inches to encourage more blooms. Deadhead spent blooms to prevent the plant from using its energy to produce seeds at the expense of flower buds. Cut back to a few inches above the ground in late fall or early spring.
Grape Lollipop™ Garden Phlox Spacing
Plants should be spaced approximately 15 inches apart when grown in a mass planting, perennial border, walkway planting or used in a large pot or container.
